It’s raining like a mutha here in Austin today. Last night, the weatherman said that his computer models indicated 12” of rain here today. I don’t believe we’ll get that much, but probably more than the 2” he said we’d likely get. We’ve had an inch already since this morning, and lots more is on the way. Below is the rain gauge at the pond about a mile from my house. You can see the 7” of rain we got in 24 hours last weekend, but that was more due to Hurricane Patricia than El Niño. You can also the the 1” since this morning. The drought is over—for now.

I’m glad it missed us in SA... for now.

I saw that San Marcos had a tornado this morning, and that East Austin is getting slammed right now.

Yee haw!

I saw the Warning down south, but have not heard of a tornado. I read on my neighborhood newsgroup that our school, about .25 mile from my house, has the kids in tornado mode. But there is no specific warning for our area.

For those of you who don’t habla español, ‘El Niño’ is Spanish for ...The Niño.

I’m on the north side (Wells Branch, near P’ville). We’ll be seeing that shortly.

Be safe, I've never seen anything quite like this.

This is reminiscent of the Memorial Day floods of this year, and also the Memorial Day floods of 1981. Local weatherman is calling this the second El Niño storm, and probably many more to come.

Better safe than sorry, I suppose.

Honestly, GOOD. Central Texas needs more rain to fill the aquifers and the lakes to capacity. I hate the fact that it comes from ridiculously heavy rains, but it’s needed.

Was the last HUGE flooding (before this year) in 1990 or 1991?

Looks like it’ll be here in the NOLA area tomorrow. Not looking forward to this weekend. :( Stay safe, compadres!

Thanks. The worst of it is south of Austin, where 11” of rain fell in three hours. It’s crazy. We live on higher ground, so I’m not worried about getting flooded myself. But my son rides the bus about 8 miles to school, and I’d like him home now. This is going to go on all day. Down south by the rivers it’s going to get very bad.

Right. It’s a mixed blessing to be sure. We need a foot of rain, just not all at once. The worst flooding was during the 1981 Memorial Day storms, but the most recent rain-fed flooding was Memorial Day of this year, and the Halloween floods of 2013.

For crying out loud, can California have some of that? Supposed to be 85 and clear skies here. It's almost November, wtf.

If I could send you some, I would. We’ve had our own exceptional drought, though, and this definitely helps. I just wish we didn’t get it all at once.

My front yard looked like a lake earlier today but it’s running off now. COTA is completely flooded in - employees are stuck in the paddock because both tunnels are full of water and all the roads around the place are flooded

You know what’s fucked up is even after last week’s 16 inches of rain in some places they still had the drought in place and like 70 counties had burn bans in place.

I'm on the north side of town, but the south definitely got shellacked. It's still coming down, but it's much lighter now. I'm glad I don't live in Onion Creek, and frankly, anybody who moved back in after the Halloween floods two years ago is crazy.

Yeah, they shut down the airport because of a tornado crossing 71. I had just gotten off 71, and it was super dangerous. Had to turn back on a few roads on my way home because the water was too deep. If I had know it was gonna get that bad, I wouldn’t have left in the first place. Not worth it.

HOLY HELL! Do you know where on 71? I'm guessing somewhere in the Del Valle area.

I just read that the first floor of Bergstrom’s air traffic control is flooded.

Yeah, it was out by the airport. I hadn't heard about the flooding at ATC, though— too busy dealing with a river of fire ants seeking higher ground in my house. Ugh.

Don’t get me started on ants. I’ve been battling them in my pantry since Sunday. Little bastards.

The colony outside is dead, but the ones in the house have survived to a lesser extent.
